OMG! I had a good feeling about Enemy Unknown already, but now, I’m totally blown away! These guys surely know how to make great games, and also vids now apparently. Look at that base management mechanics, I think I wet my pants watching that. And the camera moves, the explosions and the tactical movement and the overall feeling? Ok, just take my money now!! And this is gameplay vid #1? Will not say more about it, just watch!

Thanks to the Space Sector users Thiosk and Wilko for the tip on this one!

yeahh, I think I’ll need a couple of new lives in order to be able to play all those games coming out soon

  2. Claude says:

I agree; very impressive. Maybe the “White House” is involved in the project, who knows?
    There’s a real threat around us…

    :-)

P.S. “The Invaders”, TV series from the ’60s, deserves a remake too. My thought of the day!

I hope the glam cam is optional. It sounds like a good idea, especially if you designed or programmed it, but it also seems like the kind of feature that would become extremely annoying several hundred battles into the game.

    • Adam Solo says:

Depends on how they do it. If it’s always a long cam shot it becomes too repetitive and boring, but if they alternate that with more frequent small camera shots perhaps it’s not so bad to have them all the time, or perhaps 50% of the times.

    • zigzag says:

I think anything non-optional may be much, like the critical strike camera in Heroes V.

Think I’ll enjoy this much more than Jagged Alliance Back In Action. I love tbs combat, reminds me of first Jagged Alliance and Fallout games.

    • Adam Solo says:

Exactly. Jagged Alliance, Fallout and the original X-COM games where the best in my opinion, although, now thinking about it I don’t remember playing much more tbs tactical games like those … only a long time ago in my ZX Spectrum (Rebelstar).

Another classic that I have somehow lost. Will wait your impression before to plunge in it.

    • Adam Solo says:

You can count on that. By the look of it you’ll have a chance to get a taste of the original classics with this new installment, now with better graphics and certainly other improvements. If you played Jagged Alliance or Fallout titles you’ll have a good grasp of what the original X-COMs’ gameplay is like. Add horror, suspense and tense moments to those titles, fighting aliens instead of humans and you have a good picture of what X-COMs are.

I just dont know. Lately, the words “re-imagining” put me on edge. A bit retrograde of me, I know :-).
There are three things that bother me about this title –
    1) Single base. Not that much of a big deal, if there will be some kind of outpost / radar station / AA sites / etc.
    2) Graphics. Is it just me, or are the graphics a just a litle bit on the cartoonish side? Reminded me of TF2.
    3) Some new, exiting and (possibly) weird version of the classical turn based game play. The designer says that they moved from TU to some other concept. Frankly, that part worries me the most.

On the other hand, maybe I’m just overly cautious after the letdown that JA – Back in Action turned out to be for me.

    • Adam Solo says:

It’s unfortunate to hear that Jagged Alliance Back in Action was a let down for you.

As for your worries on XCOM I also share(d) a bit of skepticism regarding the cartoonish graphics. But after watching this trailer I’m not worried anymore, graphics look great. It’s probably a bit more cartoonish than JA for example but I’m ok with that, again after seeing this trailer.

They talk about time units don’t they? I don’t know about this one yet.

Regarding single-base, yea, I hope there’s some kind of outposts. Part of the real-time fun of the original X-COMs was about creating new bases. We’ll have to wait a bit more on that one to be sure.

    • MammothIL says:

On the “TU” issue – check out the video from 2:03 to 2:37. The designer says that they “simplified the mechanic”.
Well, we’ll know more when they’ll release “X-COM: Enemy Unknown Deep Dive #2” video, wont we ? :-)

    • Adam Solo says:

I completely misunderstood that, thanks for the heads-up! Boy, now I’m a bit worried just like you on the TU issue. “How can we simplify?” What a hell do you need to simplify man? So, don’t tell me, instead of having like 20 points to move we can only choose “run and fire”, “run”, “jump and fire”, stuff like that? Now I’m worried. Let’s wait for the Deep Dive #2 vid then (if there is one…)

    • thiosk says:

I’m not particularly worried about the TU thing. After this video hit, I reinstalled Xcom and ran through a game, having the fastest-build-up for a cydonia stomp fest ever, finishing about 90% of the prep before september of the first year.

Turn units work fine for the game, but for shooting, shots are based on a percentage. Better soldiers can get more turn units, but they can’t really take many more shots per turn because the three shot types are all based on percentages. They can walk further and still shoot, however.

Removing the TUs and just saying a soldier can walk however far and shoot, or stand still and shoot two or three times, or crouch and shoot twice, or use some special ability to jump onto a chimmney and shoot– I agree that theres no need to break it down into numbers. As long as I can move my troops in such a way that I always have the ability to save time for a shot at the end if i want it, the more modern approach might be a really good thing.

As for a single base, however, thats spooky, as I would have two-troop equipped bases and six radar installations, one of which was a huge barracks with psi-training facilities to speed up the prep for cydonia. None of that? They better give me some good management to take the edge off… we all love the combat but it was the management that kept us coming back.

  7. Smight says:

I think this game has been hit with dum down stick once too often, or as they claim “streemlined”, small squad, infinite ammo, one base, no random maps and god knows what else, my gues is small maps and quick combat as it seems the game is being build for consoles primarily, also the question is how bad of a port will the game be, at first I was also excited about the game but the more I found out about it the less fate I have in the developers, at least there are still Xenonauts.
