Starship Corporation Funding Campaign Complete

Starship Corporation

Starship Corporation is a real-time space strategy game for the PC proposed by indie developer David Murent, and it’s about spaceship design, crew management, trade and war. Today, the game finished its funding campaign at IndieGoGo.

David turn to crowd funding in order to turn his vision into a reality, and for that he asked for $6,000. Not much you would say but David explains that he needed the money to finish the single-player core aspects. The multiplayer infrastructure and a storyline would depend on how well he would do with the stretch goals.

David managed to get $20,550, which will enable him to implement the single-player gaming aspects and the online multiplayer part. He didn’t achieve the $26,000 storyline goal (by very little) but in a recent update David said that pre-orders will be available until Beta is released, so he’s confident on achieving that stretch goal as well.

The developer aims big. Not only there will be single-player gameplay but also multiplayer planned. You’ll be able to design multiple types of ships, sell those designs, build your ships, train your crew, trade, raid and terraform. Then there’s also the story-driven campaign with cut-scenes planned too.

Nice idea will look forward to this one come time for release!.

  2. Zero says:

This game is going to be like grown-up, German FTL

    • Stupid Space Lizard says:

I’m getting more of a Dungeon Keeper meets Aliens vibe from it, but it’s definitely very, very German.

    • Adam Solo says:

That’s an interesting way to put it. The parallel with FTL is inevitable, but this one seems to offer more mechanics, and looks more serious. More fun in the end? Now that’s a different story.

      • Zero says:

FTL is going to inspire a lot of games. I’ve even been cooking up a 3D version (in my brain only at this point) set in the StarDrive universe. You would still design your own ships of course – after all, this is StarDrive – but you would do it in a sort of Sims fashion, and be able to control all the various StarDrive races like spacebears, etc.

And then from there it would be a more freeform space rpg. I also thought up some mechanics where you could maneuver your ship in combat. Anyway, one of the biggest problems with being a game dev is that you get all these ideas. Gotta just focus on one!

        • Varquynne says:

Interesting you mention that, Zero. As I was playing FTL, I was trying to think how some of its gameplay mechanics and ideas could be incorporated using Stardrive’s system. Needless to say, FTL meets Stardrive would be pretty amazing! Alas, I’m no game dev/programmer, so it’ll just have to exist as dream in my mind for now. Maybe some day. Stardrive will be moddable, though, right? That could be a start for me. Baby steps. :D

I have to be completely honest, and this might sound “ideological” – but I hope the story-driven campaign never sees the light of day. The idea of using Rand’s Atlas Shrugged as the centerpiece of a game’s story is just terrible.

In my opinion Atlas Shrugged is probably one of the worse novels I have ever read. Now I understand that the game has a very “corporate”, “free-market” flare about it, but sinking into Rand’s “Objectivism” is just nutty.

Be creative. Design a somewhat original story that isn’t so ridiculously ideological.

Feel free to disagree with me of course.

On a more positive note – and I’m serious about this – congrats on getting the funding finished!
The more space games the better.

    • Gary says:

I’m sure you’ll be happy to hear that “Atlas Shrugged Part 2” is in theaters tomorrow, Oct 12, 2012 :)

    • Admiral Moe Lester says:

Don’t worry too much about the objectivism. I know David has posted on the forums that he is definitely not an objectivist himself and was influenced by it in a different way. Here is his quote

“I am not an objectivist, and the story will not be about “space-objectivists”
Sorry that I cant get into more detail why and how I was inspired by it – you will have to wait for the campaign to come out…”

I could definitely see how an anti-objectivist view could be pursued instead especially with the associations he makes with Weyland-Yutani, being a prime example of objectivism gone wrong. Plenty of other angles could come into play so I guess we will have to wait to make any final judgements

    • Ashbery76 says:

Maybe you should ask for alternative Mao’s Red Book story mode for your personal appeal.

    • Sheldon Hunt says:

Thanks for bringing that to our attention Moe.

And yeah Ashbery, Mao’s Red Guards in space would be an awesome additional campaign!
We could have intense “struggle sessions” among the crew members.
      Haha.

But seriously, I very much look forward to the final product.

  4. DaWilko says:

Just pre-ordered $10 to help them out. I love the concept.

  5. Jeff P says:

Speaking of crowd funded games, M.O.R.E. just hit their $50,000 Kickstarter goal with 16 days to go.

The more games in development the better for us gamers.
