Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion Patch v1.1 Adds More Maps

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion | Stardock and Ironclad Games

Stardock released a new patch (v1.1) for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion containing more than 40 new maps, balance tweaks and bug fixes.

These new maps (more than 40!) come in many shapes and sizes, random and “competitive” type. These last ones form the backbone of these new maps and are called competitive because they have normalized resources, meaning evenly distributed starting positions and resources for everybody, very useful for multiplayer matches. Moreover, these competitive maps have militia around planets, to further boost the challenge.

Among the new maps, this new patch also tweaks the gameplay to balance, among others, Titan ship damage and HP. It also tweaks Corvette type ships by making them more resilient or even immune to Titan effects, making them more meaningful at dealing damage or even taking down these huge ships.

See here for the full list of changes.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is Stardock’s standalone expansion that encompasses all the Sins Universe, meaning that you can play all the Sins package by acquiring Sins Rebellion. Have a look at our review if you want to know more about this great real-time space 4X game from Stardock and Ironclad Games.

To me it seems like Ironclad Games and Stardock are attempting to make the game more competitive, what with the new maps and all. Are they trying to go create some kind of esport for this game? Since if they are, the competitions would last a very long time.

  2. SQW says:

Key element of the esport is the ability to translate gameplay to an entertaining and exciting spectacle for your audiences who do NOT interact with the game.

Sins’s pacing, scale and rather static battles makes it a decent game to play but a very dull game to watch. Also, major elements of Sins are less intuitive to the layman than the squad level combat of SC II/MOBAs or FPS thus severely restricting its appeal to the wider population.

Why is every developer trying to jump onto the e-sport bandwagon? There are IPs and entire genres that are ill suited to e-sport.

Rule of thumb: does it sell like hot cake in Sth Korea? If not, it’s not e-sport material. =)

  3. Cykur says:

Yeah, Sins is not an e-sport game — most people play single player, or cooperatively with friends. There IS a small, dedicated online community, and Ironclad does make changes to try and balance multiplayer aspects of the game that the majority of gamers wouldn’t even notice. The competitive maps are just to make the competitive multiplayer experience a bit more fair.

Completely off topic here. Alex, have you heard about the new SOTS II expansion? Sounds like Kerberos is doing an Elemental: WOM here by giving away free expansion to existing owners of SOTS II. It’s so good to see consumer friendly business practices amongst all the bland AAA hype we have nowadays.

I miss playing sins. Those darn pirates were annoying but games feel so empty without them. Never went that deep because RTS was not my thing but I enjoyed the little time I spent with sins.

I wish AI wars had Sin’s graphics and it will be an RTS that I would really really love.
