Wayward Terran Frontier: Kind of an MMO Space ARPG

Wayward Terran Frontier by George Hultgren | Kickstarter

Ok, so this is not really the type of game we usually cover here. It’s space-based alright but not really a strategy game but more of an adventure free roam action-RPG where your primary concern is with character progression and fighting for loot. Nothing against that of course. But, there’s also ship design, crew management and some economy elements (basically buy and sell goods at space stations but also cargo ferrying) to look for.

But, something draws me into Wayward Terran Frontier (WTF), and while this may not be everybody’s cup of tea, knowing the audience here I would say that there are probably some Escape Velocity and Star Control fans out there, the games George Hultgren says to have taken most of his inspiration from to develop this game. Even something from Master of Orion, at least for the pixel art, says the dev. There’s also a Minecraft influence sprinkled with a bit of FTL and you probably can have an idea of where George is heading.

I don’t know about you, but I think it looks kind of cool. I got a good exploration vibe from it. Have a look for yourself. There’s an Alpha demo, a rare thing to find these days and worth giving praise to. I sucked big time playing the demo. This twitch gameplay really isn’t my thing ;)

Single-player is possible but cooperative and competitive multiplayer seems to be what the developer is really after. The indie dev talks about a persistent universe and a client-server infrastructure, so an MMO type of game is not to be excluded.

George is on Kickstarter with the hope to raise enough money to fund the art assets, sound and music, for which he’s asking for $50,000. The get-game entry price is $15. He also has a Steam Greenlight going, so if you appreciate George’s work you can also help him out by voting there.

    Looks like the Starsector (Starfarer).

If Alex ever decides to reuse his Starsector game engine and do a pure combat oriented game. =)

      Which would be pure awesome.

This game really looks cool. I hope it gets funded, I’m anxious to see where this game can go.

Seems to have a bit of SPAZ in it too, which isn’t a bad thing. I might be interested if it doesn’t go the MMO route.

Hey guys, I’ve been playing the alpha. And while I would put the learning curve at about 1-2 hours…it is well worth it. As your ships hull gets hit, its pixels eats away…you can see that happen while your in the internal view or external view.

It is not really like Starsector, as starsector doesn’t have the internal aspect. You can mod your own ships and put them in the game easily. Just open an image of a ship you want in the game give it a particular name, save it. Then invert the selection, (creating an outline but empty image), then you fill that with grey color, name it a particular name, and voila, you have your own favorite scifi universe ship in the game.

The second one is the out line of the ship which you fit your modules onto in game. The ship building is fun too, you fit down to power conduits to connect the reactor to ships systems. You fit life support modules and even airlocks. You can dock with a disabled enemy ship, then walk through your airlock and on to the ship!

If your hull is breached, the air is being sucked out and your crew will eventually die. You can have enclosed or compartmentalized areas, so that these areas are not affected by hull breaches, the great thing is, is that it is all very intuitive, but requires reading the guide on how to build etc…for an early tech alpha it is simply awesome!

a ship from my game, plus the USS Defiant plus a Bird of prey all put in the game on my side in 10 minutes…

Yeah, actually like five minutes now. It requires two files. One which is the outline for when you design the ship in game, and the other is the actual ship image. After inverting the image and saving it and painting it grey you just name the two files accordingly so the game recognizes which is which and bam…

Never seen anything like it… so you can fit your bird of prey and fly it. Fit it canon style or do your own thing. By canon style I mean put your guns on the inside where the gun ports are on the outside etc…the engines in the same areas as the thruster ports…

The game is rough, because it is after all a demo of a concept. The concept works and is fun. Learning curve 1-2 hours. Can be frustrating if you don’t learn what to do and think you can just pick up.
