Eador: Masters of the Broken World – Free DLC and Sale

Eador: Masters of the Broken World Sacred Gift DLC

Snowbird Games has announced the release of “Sacred Gift”, a free DLC add-on and patch for their 2013 release, Eador: Masters of the Broken World. This free content seems to be both a thanks and apology from the studio, as they state: “Our studio will never forget the release of Eador. It was a complete chaotic mess in the best of Russian traditions.” and go on to say that “This is why we decided to celebrate the one year anniversary of Eador. MotBW with a free content update humbly named ‘Sacred Gift’.”

So what does this update bring to the table? The most notable content is something for multiplayer fans. They have, finally, added in a multiplayer shard mode. It seems you’ll now be able to battle over a shard with or against your friend, as well as with the AI. Note that they specifically use the singular “friend” and also directly state “2 players + AI” as the available options in the changes list.

Beyond this multiplayer addition, there is additional content available as well. They’ve added 17 new units. These units are a variation of existing units, and include for example new types of dragons, golems, and gargoyles. These new units also come with some new abilities and upgrades. They’ve also included a couple new sites, 7 new spells, the ability to generate random settings for custom shards, and some new province guards. In addition, Eador: Masters of the Broken World is available on Steam for 75% off for a limited time as part of this release. This places it at an even cheaper price than one can acquire its predecessor, Eador: Genesis.

I’ve not played Eador since my review last August, and several patches have been released since then. While I had my issues with it, Eador is a game I feel is worth saving, so I’m glad to see this game is continuing to receive attention from its developers.

Before this sale runs out, I need to know if this is any good. I’ve read your review and it doesn’t sound like it, but I don’t know how much has changed…

    • Keith Turner says:

Mostly bug fixes and possibly some AI enhancements I believe, based on a quick glance at the change history. Now if the campaign issues I had have been addressed… I’d consider playing again.

Hopefully someone who has played recently will chime in with their thoughts today. I’m curious to hear as well.

Thanks for the heads-up Keith. Anyone here played MotBW who can comment on how the game plays now that it’s been patched some? I’ve had my eye on this one for a long time, and wouldn’t mind picking it up, especially at that sale price!

They seem to have fixed all of my hangs and crashes. Is the game fun? Yeah, I guess it is. Is it worth the current price? Yeah, I’d buy it at this price. It will keep you entertained for a few hours. I felt it got repetitive after a while, but I keep going back to finish another shard every few days. Honestly though, I still do not feel it is worth much more than $5, so if you are interested, get it now.

Latest 1.4.0 patch still has problems according to http://www.gog.com/forum/eador_series/masters_of_the_broken_world_worth_playing_now – given how problematic previous patches have been, it seems more than premature for Snowbird to be adding new content, whatever the pricing.

Just bought the game last night on sales.

Two major game breaking bugs after 2 hrs of playing.

        1. Dead units sometimes don’t go away – becomes impassable terrain and cannot be targeted by raise-dead spells. Need to kill everything on the map and then auto-resolve to get around that.

        2. Enemy AI units sometimes go off in random direction and circles the same two hexes until killed from range or you move within melee range.

My advice: grab the original; it’s far less buggy.

      • Keith Turner says:

The bug mentioned sounded very familiar. “Don’t bother, just bought it off Steam, found out dear developer introduced a brand new bug with 1.4.0 – units with 0HP just don’t die. They stay on board with 0hp, and when healed, they spring back to life.”

Then I remembered, the 0 hp unit bug was one I encountered back when I first previewed the game…

I quote from my original preview: “In addition, I unfortunately ran into a random, but annoying, combat bug where I would finish an enemy off, but their unit would appear to still be alive with 0 health. Even though I couldn’t attack the unit, the battle would never end when this occurred, and I would have to quit and reload a prior save.”

It almost sounds like the patches may have reintroduced old bugs. I spent over 50 hours with the game for the review and this bug was, at that time, no longer present.

EDIT: I’m sad to hear that they still haven’t patched all the bugs out…

      • SQW says:

        yup that’s the one.

Played around a bit and if you select auto combat (not auto resolve), your units will whack at the 0hp unit for a few dozen turns until it finally dies.

For a patch/DLC that’s suppose to apologise for the bug ridden release, it does not inspire confidence in this company’s future. I mean seriously, both bugs popped up by my 2nd battle; you don’t even need testers to see that.

    • Martok says:

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Sounds like I should still hold off on this one for now.

Not played in some time, but it is worth a few bucks to me. I also try to support these types of games, when I can. May have to give it another play with the new dlc.

The not playing is not a reflection on the game as much as my continued Diablo playing. Find it hard to play any of my favorite games, unless the Battlenet is down.

  4. DrBalthar says:

The problem with Eador was and probably still is as I don’t think it has changed even with the latest updates is the shear amount of repetitive grind work. Each shard basically you start from zero and unless you don’t immediately rush to conquer provinces there is no chance of winning.

    • Keith Turner says:

Yes this was ultimately my biggest issue. I just wish they would implement a better system to make it less repetitive and grindy. Most game campaigns involve some carry over of items, heroes etc. Eador had some starting bonuses you could buy..qbut it was minimal at best AND required spending precious resources you needed for unlocking options in the campaign mode dialogs. It didn’t really help.

    • lammaer says:

Fully agree. The game is very interesting and complex enough first, but it gets sooooooooo booooooring as the player progress in the campaign, I believe 95% of the players didn’t complete it.

The content is rich, high amount of units/buildings are available, but the campaign gives them sooooo sloooowly.

So my recommendation: grab it and play SKIRMISH mode.

  5. ACEofHeart says:

The 0hp bug as a few have mention renders it unplayable.. I mean it’s such an obvious mistake you have to wonder what goes on there. They send out an apology DLC and never even tested it ??? That’s not incompetence that’s just not even caring about the people who are paying for your product. period

  6. shutupanplay says:

I really felt this game had enough substance at first but got a little thin moving forward.
