The combination of city building, land combat, space combat was too good to be true. However, IG2 found a way to do it. I just wish it found more commercial success at the time.
It was kind of a sleeper hit.
What I remember most from IG2 was it's beautiful city building. It was not simcity in space

but at least provided some degree of freedom to deploy your structures. The graphics were also quite nice and provided a very nice atmosphere.
I think this is one aspect that is being neglected in recent games (Armada 2526, Sins of a Solar Empire or even GalCiv2 to name a few): the city building aspect. I really enjoyed Master of Orion 2 simple and elegant planet view, I think it was the perfect mix of good atmosphere with simple city building mechanics.
I am pretty new to the genre. I recently acquired a copy of Imperium Galactica 2 and have been enjoying it so far, the reviews were great and a lot of comments I have read seem to hold IG2 as the best of the genre.
Now, I am looking for something with the same quality but a bit more recent, hopefully to enjoy some multiplayer action. I heard about Nexus which is more or less a "sequel", but since the name "Homeworld" seems to keep coming back to my attention, I thought I'd ask you your opinion about it.
What are the main similarities/differences between these two ? Any advice ?
I am looking for something a bit more recent but not too recent so as I can play it on my laptop, hopefully with an active online community. Let me know if you have any good suggestions.

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident and Homeworld (and Homeworld 2) are both real-time space combat simulators in essence. However Nexus is more focused on space combat tactics as Homeworld has, besides that, an additional strategic component.
In Homeworld you also control a fleet but in this case you have more decisions do make (4x strategy): eXplore the vacinity, eXpand the fleet, eXploit the available resources and eXterminate your enemy.
I would say that if you prefer real-time combat tactics to 4x real-time strategy than Nexus is for you, otherwise I recommend you the Homeworld series.

I would personally recommend you to go for the Homeworld saga, i.e. the original Homeworld, Homeworld Cataclism (the expansion) and finally Homeworld 2. The Homeworld series provides good hours of fun, excitement and a fine exquisite music soundtrack (probably the best of any space game I played). You will not be disappointed.
As you are into SciFi Real-time strategy I also recommend you try a more recent (and very good) title: Sins of a Solar Empire (if you decide to buy it buy the bundle with all expansions - Trinity). Se
