When I first created this site I knew that sooner or later it would be essential to provide forums so that people could discuss the blog articles and all the space strategy gaming issues. Today is that day. Space Sector Forums are launched!
Usually what happens is that people stray around on several web sites to discuss a particular game or to discuss space strategy news, ideas or concepts. Some of these web sites are too general and many others are too specific. Continue reading...

Aphelion: Phoenix Rising is a new 4x space strategy game currently being developed by the Wyvern Studios a game development company founded by Brad Ottoson and Jared O’Connor.
I became in contact with Brad Ottoson some days ago when we were discussing my blog article: Master of Orion 2: The Formula behind the Success. We briefly discussed about Aphelion: Phoenix Rising, a new 4x space strategy game that is being developed by Brad and Jared. Brad told me that “[Aphelion] is inspired by various 4x space strategy games like MOO2 and Birth of the Federation”. Saying that I immediately decided to investigate the game progress and write an article about it. Continue reading...

This is the first of future articles about first impressions when playing a space strategy game. Of course that this kind of analysis is not so deep as a thorough review so it may be subject to more criticism, but that is a risk I´m willing to take.
Astro Empires is already a well established free space strategy (the free mode has some limitations, but is fully playable) web-based game known by many players. The idea of this article is to give the reader a global overview of this game to make it easier for newcomers. Continue reading... | 2 Comments

From time to time a game appears that revolutionalizes and makes itself the standard for a gaming genre. The monthly poll of SpaceSector.com was clear about this for space strategy games.
With 33% of the votes (27 of 83), not surprisingly, the favorite space strategy game of all time is: Master of Orion 2. With Master of Orion original game taking the second place with 9 votes. Continue reading... | 12 Comments

In many situations I have the strange feeling that i´m doing everything too fast and I don´t have time to feel the full pleasure of playing a space strategy game. Once I build something, in a few turns it is already obsolete. A new planet is discovered, colonized and immediately I can start building structures on it. This kind of feeling, in my opinion, can be minimized. Consider planet exploration.
When reaching a planet, what its normally presented? A planet, with some characteristics presented not very well detailed. Normally colonization is made instantly and all that can be done is to start building facilities. I think more could be done to give the planets more protagonism and enhance the exploration excitement. Let us re-think the concept. Continue reading... | 3 Comments

A couple weeks ago I wrote an article about freeorion where I presented the project’s current status, my first impressions and some screenshots. To read the article refer to FreeOrion: A Free Open Source 4x Space Strategy Game. I became quite interested about this project due not only to the fact that it is inspired in the Master of Orion series but also because it is an open source project being developed by the fan base community.
Anyone interested in the project can in some way contribute, by programming or just by wandering around in the project’s forum by discussing ideas for the game or help to solve bugs. The game is still in alpha stage (version 0.3 on a roadmap to 1.0) with many of its Continue reading...

Being a long time fan of the StarWars space simulation games X-Wing and Tie Fighter I thought this was the time to do my first post not exclusively related to space strategy games but about another acclaimed space gaming genre: the space simulation games. As I explain in my about page I plan to post occasionally about other space gaming genres or other non-space strategy games when I find it of interest to the space gaming community.
Yesterday I stumbled in a possible rumor, or rather teaser announcement by LucasArts, in G4 TV, that the X-Wing and Tie Fighter series could come back in the near future. Continue reading... | 1 Comment

Although many space strategy gamers are already familiarized with the term “4x” I decided to create an article in order to help introduce the concept for the so many that don’t know yet what it stands for and also to clarify a bit the concept for the so many also that think they know what it stands for but are not completely sure about it (before I wrote the article I was included in this last bunch
) – but it gets confusing sometimes, well, keep reading).
In the gaming world “4x” stands for: “eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate”. The ‘4x’ concept is well covered in the wikipedia here. Essentially the games that are catalogued as ‘4x’ must, at least, possess the following characteristics (or provide the following phases) Continue reading... | 2 Comments

While doing some research on the latest news about space strategy games under development I came across with the FreeOrion project.
FreeOrion is an open-source project which goal is to build a turn based 4x space strategy game. The entire project is community-centered were people that share the common motivation are invited to contribute to build the game in many ways, some as programmers, others as conceptual designers, others as opinion makers.
As stated in the project vision the game is inspired in the Master of Orion series and it will be a turn-based strategy game built in the classic 4x model style. Continue reading... | 4 Comments

I recently found Ogame, a free browser based massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) of space strategy (4x style). If you’re not familiar (yet) with these types of games basically you just need an internet connection and a browser and you are all set to start playing.
Ogame is developed by Gameforge and is a space strategy game 4x like any other but you play it using solely your web browser. It features all the 4x essentials: research, resource gathering, colony management, spaceship building, fleet management and space combat but in real time strategy style, against the traditional turn based gameplay.
