In order to find out more about Empire of the Eclipse I contacted Lee Dotson for an interview. Here is what he had to say about his game.

Ascendancy (the old classic) is a 4x space turn-based strategy game released for DOS in 1995. Two days ago it has been re-released for iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) by The Logic Factory, the same company that released the original DOS version in 1995. The original Ascendancy was released very close to other classic game, Master of Orion 2. Both games are very similar in many aspects. The game developers say that the iOS remake sticks quite true to the original version.

Star Ruler is a real-time 4x space strategy game developed by Blind Mind Studies, a startup Computer Game development company. The story goes that the company run out of budget during game development and to be able to finish the game they had no choice than to release it in 21st of August 2010 to be able to do some cash in. Since then they have been very active, releasing patch after patch.

Gemini Wars is a Space Real-Time Strategy (RTS) Game currently being developed by Camel 101, an independent and self funded game development studio.

Only 4 months after releasing Civilization 5 Sid Meier has announced he’s upcoming Civilization game. This time Sid turns to Facebook. The official title is Civilization World (aka Civ World). Sid says that in Civ World you will be joining your friends to form nations, which will compete with other player’s nations to rule the world. Sid also announced that they are going to launch the closed Alpha test of the game in January 12th 2011 and invites everybody to sign up at 2K Civ World alpha website to become part of the development testing.

Today Zarksoft Games announced Empire of the Eclipse, a 4x online real-time strategy game that can be played anywhere at any time ... but it is not a web browser game. In an unprecedented move Zarksoft Game designed Empire of the Eclipse for Apple's iOS family of devices (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) which is a clear market bet. And the stakes are very high. Jon Shafer, the lead designer and principal programmer of Civilization 5, the last Civ game released by Firaxis Games in September 2010, announced in December 2010 that he was leaving Firaxis (where he was employed for 5 years). The reasons for his departure were not made public and so the Civ5 fanbase discussed (speculated) intensely in the CivFanatics’s site forums which could have been the reasons for his departure.
