Space 4X SpaceWard Ho! Now Available for the iPhone/iPod

Spaceward Ho! | Space 4X Game

Spaceward Ho! is a classic space 4X game, and one of the first ever released, back in 1990. Already available for PC and Mac and then for the iPad, Spaceward Ho! is now also available for the iPhone and iPod Touch iOS devices. Along with the now universal iOS support, there’s also a new update which brings the game to version 1.1, which adds updated icons and dialogs, no more Mac ads, a fleet movement window, Game Center support with leader boards so that you can compare your achievements with other players, among other changes. Multiplayer is not in yet but the devs promise to be already working on it.

In Spaceward Ho! expect to find economic management, military warfare, exploration, colonization, research, diplomacy, terraforming and other traditional 4X features. I hate not having an iOS device to try out this space 4X oldy re-incarnation. If you have one of these mobile toys you can grab your copy at iTunes for $4.99.

Er, wasn’t it available back in like, April? :/

  2. Jeff P says:

The prices for the PC/Mac version are ridiculous: $25! Sure it is a classic, but it remains a minimal game in game play, sound and graphics and would be expensive at a fraction of that cost.

    • Happy Corner says:

Yeah, getting Distant Worlds flashbacks here… that’s pretty absurd for a game from 1990, especially considering that the iOS version is like $5. What are they thinking?

      • Zeraan says:

I was about to buy it for PC, after seeing the $5 price tag. I was rudely greeted by a $25 price tag for the PC version, so no buy there. :(

  3. Chris Biot says:

All these games for mobile devices are really convincing me to get one. I need to fulfill my 4X needs everywhere.

Don’t mean to be a ‘Luddite’ ;o), but I still don’t understand why anyone would want to play a game on the tiny mobile device screens? Give me my 28″ desktop monitor with 5.1 surround sound in the comfort of my home study where I can give a game the full attention it deserves. :O)

I don’t know about you, but i don’t find my 28″ screen very portable. Sometimes you need or want to be somewhere else.

Though i agree, many games aren’t as good in a small-screen mobile format.

I remember playing this a little back years ago. I didn’t find it very interesting — too simplistic and silly. IIRC MoO1 or Starbase Orion had much, much more depth. Unless it has changed a lot (or my memory is inaccurate) they are on the far, far side of the price/value bell curve.

loved this game… today it’s a bit to simple for a pc game.. but for a round or two on the mobile… would love it.. to bad it’s not for android :/

  7. Evil Azrael says:

Hm wrong Platform. For android i would have bought it immediately. I still own the original game, almost in pristine condition. It’s now 20 years old. and one of my first games. It was one of last games which supported Hercules graphic cards and it came with a 5,25″ HD and 3,5″HD disk which was good for me, as i had only a 5.25″ HD and a 3.5″ DD drive. 640k RAM and HDD required is printed on the box. 640k..

  8. Cristo says:

any chance this will come out on android too?
